On a radiomarket in Germay some years ago I found this single channel crystal controlled mini manpack. I had never seen one like this before, so I bought it hoping to modify it for amateur radio.
It is working on 2485KHz in USB not far away from 160m ham band. The radio was without any manual. A bit of searching on the web in russian language, I found the complete manual for it.
Furthermore I found the site of RV6LML http://rv6lml.qrz.ru/. There you can find the information to modify this interesting radio for 160m or 80m band.
RV6LML modified the Karat-2N for LSB using other Filter. It is very hard for me to find these filter what he is using. So I modified my radio only in the working frequency to 160m without the modification to LSB.
The karat-2H is working with 12V from D-cell batteries. Today it is better to fit up an accupack with LiFePo4 accus that gives you more energy.
This radio is not a military manpack transceiver, it is a civil one. They are in use for geology and oil searching. I found the website of the manufacter http://www.ziko55.ru/main.php?id=48 this radio is still in production.
Here are pictures of the radio, microphone, whip antenna, wire antenna, counterpoise and pocet.
