Analog low frequency USB to LSB inverter

Messaggio: #37271 PA0CHS

This month, August 2020, the British V-Mars magazine published a state of the art version of a low frequency USB to LSB inverter intended for USB-only transceivers and receivers in order to make them suitable for LSB.
The V-Mars system uses a special PIC-processor as central part of the circuit (GW7BBY/GB2MOP Spectre: Spectral inversion for USB-only radios). It was developed by G4GXO and G0TNF.

The principle is not new: mid nineties I0BR developed and published an analog version of a low-frequency USB to LSB inverter. About 20 years ago I made my own version, mainly based on available junkbox components and was designed for the GRC-106 transceiver. Heart of the inverter was a TBA-120. The V-Mars design shows that the analog design is for sure outdated now(!), but could be still useful due to the use of cheap and readily available components.
The "junkbox USB-inverter" was described in an article for the Dutch Surplus Radio Society. It is written in Dutch language, but has an English summary. Google-translate could be used to translate the full article in case of any interest in the design.

I used the TBA120 some 40 years ago (!) as FM demodulator. Never seen it as LF modulator, amazing!
And cheap (if still available) .

Hi Ugo,

The TBA-120 works perfect as audio DBM, but has a bit more distortion as a dedicated modulator like the SL1640. But the TBA-120 is cheap.
BTW I just found some Plessey SL1640’ s on EBay. Price around $ 10,— Not bad at all!

Have a nice day.

Hi Helvezio,

Tnx for your reply. Yes, the TBA-120 works very good at low frequencies! Undoubtedly the inverter will work with PRC320’ s etc. Some minor adjustments of the input attenuator may be required, that’s all.
Reverse operation, from LSB to USB, works fine without any circuit alteration (tested with a EKD300 communications receiver).
Slowly analog techniques are wiped out by digital techniques, but the ease of construction of the analog converter can up to now compete with the digital system. But for how long :-) ?

ok Jan,

Hi Helvetio,

Many thanks for your comment! You really put 'em in fifth gear to breadboard the USB inverter in a record time!
(The proof of the pudding is in the eating)
The filter characteristics are bad, but I have the same experience when I tried to miniaturize the original filter
with 40 mH miniature inductors. Via "Elsie" a free internet program for filterdesign from Tonnesoftware I calculated a
filter for the afore mentioned inductors. I used ceramic (wrong!) capacitors to construct an experimental AF-filter with the original properties. Unfortunately filterresponse was a more or less a lookalike of your filterresponse.
So it has to do with the inductors. The original filter was designed for a high grade direct conversion receiver.
See attached link for details.
https://www.arrl.org/files/file/Technol ... 208019.pdf
The designers used rather bulky, but high grade TOKO RB10 33mH ferrite cores.
Q = 100 at 50 kHz, R = 26 Ohm DC, I = 9 mA max. The filter characteristics shown in the ARRL-article are very good,
that' s why I copied the filter (claimed shapefactor 1.6:1). Apart from the VMARS-design, one can use the National MF6 electronic switched filters for analog designs. Dynamic range is about 80 dB.
The noise you experienced could be possibly caused by the breadboard. I can 't remember noise at low signal levels, but it is a long time ago that I used the inverter in practice.
